Email digests — newsletter & job-search pulse

WaypointCareer sends two independent digest emails. The newsletter (this page's original subject) summarizes progress, plans, pending reading, and announcements weekly or monthly. The job-search pulse covers the search itself — new matches, deadlines, interviews, goal pace — daily (paid plans) or weekly (all plans). Both are controlled in Settings → Notifications.

TL;DR — Weekly by default; switchable to Monthly or Off. Empty digests (nothing to report) are intentionally skipped so the email always has substance when it shows up.

What's in it

Each section appears only if there's something to say — empty sections are hidden.

  1. Progress — your goal hit-rate over the window (last 7 or 30 days). Pulled from GoalProgress rows the period-closer wrote.
  2. Active goals — count + breakdown by cadence (Daily / Weekly / Monthly / Quarterly / Yearly). Quick link back to /goals.
  3. Reading — still pending — the top 2 articles and top 2 videos you've added but haven't finished (status = Reading or Want to Read), most recently touched first. Each item links to the source URL when you saved one.
  4. Self-evaluation overdue — a single nudge if you haven't completed a self-eval in the last 90 days. Honest scoring keeps the radar useful.
  5. From WaypointCareer — any platform-wide announcements the team has published (new features, scheduled maintenance, etc.). Same content the in-app banner shows.

The unsubscribe footer is on every digest (RFC 8058 one-click), and a link to /settings?tab=notifications lets you change frequency without leaving your mail client.

When it sends

The scheduler runs the digest pass once a day. It picks up your account when your lastNewsletterSentAt is older than your cadence window (7 days for Weekly, 30 days for Monthly). If the assembled payload for you would be empty — no progress, no pending reading, no announcements, no self-eval prompt — the digest is skipped and the watermark is still bumped so the same empty payload isn't reconsidered every day.

Change frequency or unsubscribe

  • Open /settings → Notifications and pick Weekly, Monthly, or Off.
  • Or use the one-click unsubscribe link in the footer of any digest email — sets your preference to Off immediately.

Re-subscribing later is one click in the same settings page.

The job-search pulse

Sections (each hidden when empty):

  1. New matches — jobs that landed since your last pulse, still in New. Free shows the count + top 3; paid shows up to 10 with location, salary range, and source.
  2. Deadlines this week — applications with a deadline in the next 7 days (live statuses only). Free shows the nearest; paid lists up to 10 with days-left.
  3. Upcoming interviews — scheduled rounds in the next 7 days that are still pending.
  4. Goals behind pace — active goals with zero progress past the halfway point of their current period.
  5. Search-firm follow-up (Directorship+) — open engagements untouched for 14+ days, linking to the CRM.

Due windows mirror the newsletter: a daily pulse sends when the last one is ~20 hours old, a weekly one at ~6.75 days, and empty pulses are skipped with the watermark still advanced. If a Daily subscriber's plan lapses, sends degrade to weekly until the plan renews — the saved preference is untouched.
