Application Documents
Application Documents (/settings?tab=documents) is where you define how your tailored resumes and cover letters are built: one template per document kind, plus a label on each resume so the right one gets picked up. Available on every paid plan.
TL;DR — Nothing is preconfigured. Until you create a resume template and a cover letter template, document generation refuses to run and tells you what is missing. Create both, then label your resumes if you keep more than one.
Why nothing is preconfigured
There is no starter template and no default styling. A resume built from invented formatting is worse than no resume at all — it looks like your document, carries your name, and is wrong in ways you would not notice until after you sent it. So an unconfigured account gets a clear refusal ("setup required") instead of a plausible-looking guess.
That is also why this screen exists before anything that consumes it: it is the only place a working configuration can come from.
Creating a template
Click Add template and fill in:
- Kind — Resume or Cover letter. You need one of each. Templates of the same kind can coexist; one of them is the default.
- Name — how you recognise it in the list, e.g. "Standard resume" or "Board resume".
- Tailoring instructions — free text, and the most important field on the form. This is what guides how the document is adapted to a particular job description: what to emphasise, what to leave out, what must never be invented, and when to skip a job rather than apply. Write it the way you would brief a person.
- Default for this kind — the template used when nothing else is chosen. Turning it on for one template turns it off for the others of that kind.
The rest of the form is styling, described below.
What each style field controls
| Field | What it does |
|-------|--------------|
| Font | The typeface used throughout the document, e.g. Calibri. It must be a font the reader has; a missing font is substituted by Word. |
| Body pt | Size of ordinary paragraph and bullet text. |
| Heading pt | Size of section headings such as EXPERIENCE. |
| Name pt | Size of your name at the top of the document. |
| Line spacing | Multiplier — 1.0 is single-spaced, 1.15 is a common resume value. |
| Margins (top / right / bottom / left) | Page margins in inches. Tighter margins fit more on a page. |
| Heading colour | A 6-digit hex value such as #1F3864. Used for section headings, your name and the rule under headings. |
| Uppercase headings | Renders headings in capitals. |
| Rule under headings | Draws a thin line beneath each section heading. |
| Bullet character | The glyph used for bullets, e.g. ▪. |
| Section order | Comma-separated list, e.g. Summary, Experience, Education. Sections you do not list still appear — after the ones you did, in their original order. Matching ignores case and surrounding spaces. |
The Style column in the template list shows whether a saved template is still valid. If a value is out of range or malformed, the column lists exactly which fields to fix. An invalid template is never quietly replaced by a working one — it stays broken and visible until you correct it.
Labelling your resumes
The Resumes card lists every resume on your account, not only the active one.
- Label — a short name for the resume, e.g. "Platform leadership".
- When to use it — one line describing the roles it suits, e.g. "Use for infra and platform org roles".
Labels only matter when you keep more than one resume. With a single resume there is nothing to choose between, so the label is optional. With several unlabelled resumes there is no way to tell which one fits the role, so the setup banner asks you to label them.
Both fields save when you click out of the box.
What the "setup incomplete" messages mean
The banner at the top of the screen lists everything still missing, all at once:
- Add a resume template. No template of kind Resume exists yet.
- Add a cover letter template. No template of kind Cover letter exists yet.
- Label your resumes so the agent can choose between them. You have more than one resume and none of them carry a label.
The banner disappears when every item is resolved. It is a hint, not the gate — the refusal you would get from document generation is authoritative.
Connecting Claude
The same tab holds Agent connector, where you'll find the URL that lets Claude work in your account: read the jobs you're interested in, draft a tailored resume and cover letter using the templates above, and record what you applied to.
It also lists every client currently connected and lets you disconnect one, which cuts it off immediately — it has to be approved again before it can read anything.
The templates and resume labels on this page are what that work is built from, so set them up first. Full walkthrough: Connect Claude.
Plan availability
Application Documents is part of the automation feature set on every paid plan: Managerial, Directorship, Leadership and Executive. On the Free plan any templates you created are kept and remain visible, but automated generation returns an upgrade notice rather than a document.
